Elizabethan Era
The clothing worn during the Elizabethan era showed the status of the person wearing them. Rich men and women wore satin, silk or velvet. They also wore clothing made of furs, lace, cottons and taffeta. Many of these materials came from different countries like silk from China and velvet from Italy. The materials came in many different colors which were expensive since they were made from dyes that came from special insects or plants from different parts of Europe and Asia. People of lower classes usually had clothes made of wool, linen and sheepskin. Clothes were dictated by the Sumptuary Law which told people not to dress outside of their own class. If this law was violated people would be penalized harshly.
